It’s already back-to-school time in Georgia, and that means lots of students are getting ready for school sports. Parents will be shopping for gear to get their kids ready and hopefully, they’ll also encourage them to take the following steps to help prepare physically.
Get Hydrated
Dehydration contributes to muscle fatigue and can increase the risk of injury. It’s important to start now and get in the habit of staying hydrated BEFORE the sports season begins. Then as outdoor exposure increases and exercise becomes more intense, increase the amount of water intake to replace what is lost through sweating. This can help prevent cramps, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke.
By the way, sodas and other sugary drinks loaded with caffeine may taste good and give a quick boost of energy, but they will not keep the body hydrated. H2O is the way to go and in the heat of the moment, if strenuous activity lasts for more than one hour, consider a healthy sports drink. Here’s a list of drinks packed with electrolytes that they may want to try. (You’ll notice smoothies are on the list. Here’s our great recipe.)
Move Your Body
It’s very important that athletes stay active between sports seasons. Even for kids and teens, keeping muscles fit can help avoid muscle strains and torn ligaments. It also conditions the body to high temperatures and humidity. Young athletes need to get outside and build up a tolerance to the heat while getting their bodies ready for strenuous training.
If they’ve been a little relaxed this summer, help them set some goals and jot them down. Encourage them to work their way up to the level of fitness needed in order to transition more easily into school sports.
Get Your Gear Lined Up Correctly
Shopping may be the fun part, but it’s no fun when you show up with the wrong gear. Find out what the team requirements are before you spend your hard-earned money. (If your kids are like most, there’s already a list crammed somewhere just waiting to be pulled out at the last minute. Ask them to go get it.)
Get a Physical
Most sports teams require a physical, so get the necessary forms, and stop by one of our convenient urgent care locations!!
